Although her memorial marker reads 1879 was her year of birth, Bessie was born on February 17, 1880 to Timothy and Elizabeth Jordan King. Marriage records indicate she was 13 ½ years old when she married George Deen. She was one month shy of her 15th birthday when she gave birth to Cary, her first of 14 children. They were: Cary, McCoy, Zeb, Abraham, Hattie, George, Mattie, Desseau, Estelle, Katie, Margaret, Bernice, Dorothy and Albert. She was born in Ware County, GA and later moved her family to Berrien County, GA and finally moved to Palm Beach County, FL, in the late 20's or early 30's, where she lived until her death.

Although she commonly expressed her name as Bessie Elizabeth Deen as an adult, it should be noted that the name Bessie itself is a nickname for Elizabeth. In the 1880 Census Timothy and Elizabeth are enumerated with 2 month old (Feb) Gerta. In 1917, her husband George Deen registers for the WWI draft and list Gertrude as his next of kin in Nashville, GA. In the absence of any other explanation, it is assumed that due to anti German sentiment in the early part of the 20th century she dropped the name Gertrude and went by Elizabeth and or Bessie.
