He graduated from Geddes High School in 1938, and enrolled at Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell. While attending Dakota Wesleyan, he enlisted in the Army Reserve in the 147th Field Artillery Band. His unit was activated in November 1940, and spent the next year at Fort Ord, California. On November 30, 1941, the unit departed Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, enroute to the South Pacific and was at sea when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He remained on active duty overseas, playing nearly 900 concerts for Allied troops, until his discharge in early 1945. Upon his return home he was able to finish his education. He attended Gila Junior College in Mesa, Arizona and graduated from the University of California with a degree in music education in 1948. He completed his master's degree at the University of Wyoming in 1954.

On August 4, 1951, he married Helene Weber, and the couple taught school together in Custer, South Dakota. In 1957 they moved to Belle Fourche, where he has resided since. Wayne was the band director at Belle Fourche High School from 1957 to 1963. He left the teaching profession and worked as a special agent for Prudential Insurance Co. from 1963 until his retirement in 1982. He loved the outdoors and began fly fishing when he first moved to Custer, continuing until shortly before his death. He also enjoyed hunting and camping with his family.

Wayne was active in many local organizations including the Belle Fourche Cowboy band which he directed both from 1957 to 1963, and again upon its reorganization in 1982 for several years. He was active in the American Legion and served as the bugler for the Belle Fourche Honor Guard at military funerals and services throughout the area. He sang with the Northern Hills Barbershop Chorus and served as their director for a number of years. He was an active adult volunteer with the Boy Scouts, and received the Silver Beaver award for his work with area boys. He was active in the Belle Fourche Congregational Church, serving as choir director and as a member of numerous boards and committees over the 52 years in which he was a member. He was a past master of Cedar Lodge #124, AF&AM, and was a member of the Black Hills Consistory and Naja Temple, AAONMS.
