Ernest and his family resided in Perry, Iowa until 1906 when they moved to a homestead 12 miles south of Akron, Colorado. He lived there until 1944 when he moved to Akron.

On Dec. 25, 1920, his wife Rosetta died, leaving him to care for eleven children. On Jan. 31, 1924 he married Mrs. Myrtle Lane.

After moving to Akron he took up the duties of deputy sheriff of Washington Co., and also district court bailiff.

He is survived by his wife Myrtle, sons Virgil, Clarence, Paul, Ernest and Donald, step-son George Lane, daughters Fae Steinmetz, Mae Helms, Alberta Saxton, Thelma Witt and Iva Wix. He was pre-deceased by his first wife and daughters Bernice and Dorothy.
