George W. Fisk was born in Canterbury, Windham, CT to Bingham and Lydia Smith (Avery) Fisk. He was the youngest of their children, which included three older full sisters, and numerous half siblings from both parents' previous marriages. His parents both died within a year of each other, while he was only a boy of 13; but, fortunately, he had many older sisters to help care for him. He learned the trade of masonry, and traveled for a bit as a young man in pursuit of that trade. On 4 Aug 1872 he married Miss Viola A. Sprague in the First Baptist Church of Iola, Allen, KS. Minister M.D. Gage performed the ceremony. George and Viola moved their family intermittenly between Iola, KS; Thayer, MO; and Garnett,KS; but, eventually stayed in Iola, where George worked as a farmer till his passing.
