Daniel Cumming Baird was born August 16, 1887, in Charleston, Utah, to Robert and Sarah Baird. He was their sixth child, but first to survive to adulthood.
When Daniel was about six years old, his family moved from their farm in the Heber Valley south of Heber City, Utah, to Provo. Daniel received his first three years of Schooling in the Brigham Young Academy at Provo, while his father was attending school there. The family moved back to Heber Valley when Daniel was nine.
From 1897 to 1899, a heavy responsibility fell on Daniel, as he milked and cared for the family's cows, selling milk to a nearby creamery to support the family, and his father, who had been called to serve a mission in the southern states.
When Daniel was 13, the family was called to help establish a colony in northern Wyoming. The family left for Cowley on April 5, 1900, and arrived May 25.
Daniel was a graduate of the Big Horn Academy Class of 1913. He married Ona Lucinda Nebel April 1, 1915, in the Salt Lake Temple. Daniel and Ona had eight children, Ona Toynette, Floyd Eugene, Reva, Marguerite, Melvin, Robert Nebel, Laura May, and Wilma.
Daniel loved reading good books, and bought almost every new church book that came out. Daniel died June 13, 1969, at the age of 81. He is buried in the Cowley Cemetery.
