Graveside services for Bernard Francis Bean, 87, of Elkhart will be at 4 p.m. Friday at the Chaffin Family Cemetery with the Rev. Lynn Wilhite officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Bailey and Foster Funeral Home. Mr. Bean went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008 at the Elkhart Oaks Care Center, Elkhart, Texas. Bernard was born in Crockett, Texas on Sept. 16, 1921, to Eden and Mamie Chaffin Bean. He spent most of his youth with his grandparents, George and Rhoda Chaffin. He was a member of Southside Baptist Church, Palestine. During the 1940s, Bernard served in the Merchant Marines aboard numerous merchant ships. Locally, he worked at the Calhoun Packing Plant during which time he applied for and was accepted, trained and worked as a federal meat inspector. For 25 years, he worked with the wonderful group of people at the Elkhart State Bank. Bernard is survived by a sister, Billie Cerillo; cousins, Joe E. Chaffin, Della Christian, Winnie Ritchie, Harold Skidmore, Treva Finch and Jean Trahan; numerous other cousins and special friends, Rita Parker, Lana Harrod, Tammy Reagan, Lela Holder and employees of The Elkhart State Bank. Honorary pallbearers will be Joe E. Chaffin, Harold Skidmore, Joe W. Chaffin, Roger Parker, Jim Bob Parker and Steve Neel. In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to Chaffin Cemetery, c/o Elkhart State Bank, P.O. Box 427, Elkhart, Texas, 75839.
