Esther G. Hovey, 78, DeWitt, Iowa, died Thursday morning, March 1, 2007, at Genesis Medical Center, DeWitt.
Mrs. Hovey was born Esther Gertrude McManus, January 28, 1929, in DeWitt, Iowa, the daughter of Edward J and Hazel Mae (Butterfield) McManus. Esther married Lyman Hovey, January 28, 1950. He preceded her in death March 25, 1973.
She had worked at First Central State Bank, DeWitt, and retired from Iowa Mutual Insurance Company September 19887. She later worked at DeWitt Community Hospital.
Esther liked checking on the wellbeing of her neighbors. She enjoyed family activities of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren. Especially the babies and "the Granddog" Corky.
Esther loved her bunco club, she enjoyed starting and growing african violets and outside flowers. She was still digging dirt this past growing season.
Surviving are children, Patricia (Dennis) McClintic, DeWitt, and Christine (Mike) Dunlavey, Lost Nation, Dean (Theresa) Hovey, DeWitt, and Cynthia Jo Willis, DeWitt; 10 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, Eugene (Edna) McManus, DeWitt; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Lyman, Esther was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Baxter, her parents, brothers, Paul and Bob, and sisters, Sister Margaret Ann and Marcella Wagner.
The family received relatives and friends at Schultz Funeral Home on Sunday. Funeral liturgy was at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, March 5, 2007, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt. Pallbearers were Eric and Brent Baxter, Jeremy, Rick and Randy Dunlavey and Kyle Hovey.
