IRONTON TRIBUNE
Ironton, Lawrence Co., OH
2 June 1904

Another useful man and ideal citizen has been called from among us. It has of late been the painful duty of this paper to chronicle the demise of an unusual number of our very best people, but we confess that it is with added poignancy and deep grief we are called upon to announce the death of so good a man as was William H. Alford. He was probably one of the best known personages in our county, for his life which was an open book, was also devoted to his family, the public service, and to the exercise of those delicately refined responsibilities, so largely developed in him, and which drew unto him a host of warm, sorrowing friends.

Mr. Alford was born in Lawrence county, Ohio, near the city of Ironton, September 6, 1862. He remained with his people on the farm until his twenty-third year. He came to Morris County in 1885, and worked on a farm near Parkersville until the autumn of that year, and taught school during the winter of 1885 and 1886. In the spring of 1886 he entered the general merchandise establishment of A. Dilley & Co. at Parkersville, in which capacity of clerk and salesman he remained and rendered faithful service for thirteen years.

On September 20, 1892 he was married to Miss Anna L. Golden, also of Lawrence county, Ohio, whom he brought to Parkersville, where together they made their home until they removed to Council Grove [Morris Co., KS]. Two lovely children came to bless their home, Vivian, a daughter, and Leland, a son. Mrs. Alford and these two children survive the husband and father.

W.H. Alford was elected to the office of Register of Deeds in November, 1899, re-elected in 1902, his present term would have expired in January, 1905. His work in this office was conspicuously correct, prompt and neat, and his obliging, accommodating manners in the discharge of his official duties will not soon be forgotten.

He was an exemplary member, and an efficient deacon, of the Baptist church of this city, and as such, was ever endeared to the pastor and people of that denomination. He was also superintendent of the Sabbath school of that church, but his failing health caused him to resign.

Mr. Alford died at his home in Council Grove May 12th, 1904, at 11:15 p.m. at the age of forty-one years, eight months and six days. On Sunday, 14th inst, his funeral took place from the Baptist church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Rickman, assisted by Rev. Brownlee, and under Masonic auspices, he being a working member of that order, as well as that of the Modern Woodmen which bodily was also in attendance....
