DEATH TAKES DIRECTOR OF COACH TRAFFIC, L. F. Whitehead Served Utility Firm 52 Years; Funeral Today
L. F. Whitehead, 73, veteran employe of the Jacksonville Coach Company and its predecessors, died early yesterday in a hospital here following an illness of one week.
Mr. Whitehead, who resided at 5720 Oakridge Street, was the oldest employe in years of service of the city's transportation system, having served continuously for 52 years.
HE WAS BORN IN SCOTLAND NECK, N. C. and came to Jacksonville 57 years ago. When he became connected with the transportation line, this city was served by horse-drawn street cars. He had continued to serve through the system's advancement to trolley's and finally to buses.
Most of Mr. Whitehead's long service was as chief inspector. At the time of his death he was traffic supervisor.
During the more than half a century Mr. Whitehead served the transportation lines he had never missed a day from work because of illness and his sudden death came as a shock to hundreds of friends he had made here. He was a familiar figure on streets of the city, especially at Main and Adams, at which corner he worked for many years. He was a member of the Woodmen of the World.
Mr. Whitehead is survived by two sons, Harold W. Whitehead, member of the City Council representing the Twelfth Ward, and Edgar Whitehead; six daughters, Mrs. Ellis Hirtzing, Mrs, H. D. Strickland and Mrs. A. E. Thrower, all of Jacksonville, and Mrs. E. C. McLeod of Shamrock; a brother, Charles Whitehead of Hollister, and a sister, Miss Sallie Whitehead of Atlanta. Funeral services will be held at 3 P. M. today at the North Main Street Baptist Church, the Rev. A. L. Godwin, pastor, officiating.
Pallbearers will be: Active: J. C. Raulerson, J. N. Whitfield, D. M. North, L. H. Scott, Luther Lamons, and Ellis Taylor; honorary, C. W. Hendley, J. E. Pace, J. Ray Permenter, Fleming Bowden, Tom Marshall, Judge Bryan Simpson, Judge Charles Miller, H. S. Albury, W. T. Gordon, Herbert Bayer, W. J. Singleton, R. C. Miller, T. E. McDowell, Ben H. Dale, Bowen MacDonald and L. A. Reynolds.
Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery under the direction of the Key-McCabe Funeral Home.
