Samuel was the sixth of eight known children born to James Samuel Travis Broadnax and Charlotte Isobelle Hoopaugh Broadnax. He enlisted in the service during WWI in Americus, GA (1917). He went to Camp Wheeler and then overseas with the Rainbow Division. He transferred to the 91st Division, 316 Engineers. He was wounded at the Battle of the Argonne Forest (Meuse-Argonne Offensive) 26 September 1918 and died ten days later. In 1921 his body was returned to family for burial in GA.
