SHAWNEE, Charles

Plunging helplessly down a 25-foot embankment in a Ford car with a locked steering, Charles J. Shawnee, 52 year old Delaware Indian of Ramona, Oklahoma met his death on Monday.

The accident occurred about six miles southeast of Ramona on the highway between Ramona and Talala, along side the Caney River, at 9 o'clock in the morning. Rushed to Memorial Hospital in a semi-conscious condition, Shawnee died there of internal injuries at 6:40 p.m. Monday evening. He was the only one in the car when it leaped the embankment and made the fatal plunge.

Shawnee had taken his small son to a friend's for a Fourth of July visit and was returning home. The boy had been out of the car only a few moments when the steering gear locked causing his father's death. The plunging machine rolled over twice and when it stopped, it was lying on one side. The car was completely demolished.

People living near the road lifted the half-conscious man from the wreckage and took him into their house where he was administered to temporarily. A McCallister ambulance rushed to the scene of the tragedy and brought the dying driver to Bartlesville.

His ribs on the right side were badly caved in and he suffered other internal injuries as well as minor cuts and bruises.

The dead man leaves a wife, two sons, and a sister. One son is grown.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 this afternoon at the Friends Church of Ramona with Rev. J.A. Griffith officiating. Burial will be in the Ramona Cemetery. McCallister undertakers will be in charge.
