The mother of a 9-month-old boy found dead in bed early Saturday morning did not learn of the baby's death until she stepped off the bus in Kingsport at 4 a.m. Monday after a trip to Pennsylvania.
Relatives were at the scene to tell Mrs. Roy H. Lawson, 35G Virgil Ave., that her child had died, apparently the victim of suffocation, while she was on a weekend visit with her husband.
The child's father has been working in Connecticut, and Mrs. Lawson had gone to spend a few days with him in Pennsylvania. Relatives were unable to contact the parents there. Lawson was told of the tragedy after he returned to Connecticut by Connecticut State Police. The message was relayed by the Tennessee Highway Patrol. He was enroute to Kingsport.
The baby, Bryan Howard Lawson, and the Lawson's three other children were being cared for by Mrs. Lawson's sister while the mother was out of town.
Surviving in addition to the parents (Mr. and Mrs. Roy Lawson)are one sister, Treva, two brothers, Lee Roy and Elvis, all at home; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sturm Lawson, Church Hill; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Dollie Christian, Church Hill; and great grandparents, Mrs. Susie Christian; Church Hill; and Lee Christian, Rogersville.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Morning Star Freewill Baptist Church. Rev. Harley Brown and the Rev. James Byford will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
