Lewellyn was the son of Solomon Devoir and Margaret Jane (Goodwin) Devoir. Lewellyn married first Benecia Brown in 1881 and she died in 1887, he married second Matilda Erickson in 1890. Lewellyn moved to Yakima from Clinton County, Missouri in the fall of 1888. In most all records after his second marriage, he was listed as being about ten years older than he actually was for some reason.

Lewellyn's birth was recorded in Cabell County, (West) Virginia birth records. Lewellyn was one year old in the 1860 census of Cabell County, (West) Virginia.
