Frederick H. Bielefeld (also spelled Bealefeld) was born in the Kingdom of Hannover. He owned a blacksmithing shop on Washington Road, in the village of Mt. Winans, in what is now southwest Baltimore. He and his wife, Magdalena Soeder/Sader Beielefeld (1843-1922), had seven children, of whom six have been identified, including three from Magdalena's first marriage: George Smith (b. 1862, MD), Louis Smith (b. 1864, MD), Catherine Smith (b. approx. 1866), John (b. 1875) , Barney (1873-1959), and Dora (b. 1880), and Frederick.
