Civil War Union Brevet General.Appointed 1st Lt. 75th New York Infantry 17 Sept. 1861 and began field service at Fort Pickens, Fla. After the capture of New Orleans his regiment occupied Pensacola and from there was ordered to New Orleans and for a time was attached to Weitzels Brigade. He was given jurisdiction over La Fourche parish and was authorized and instructed to organize the Seventy Sixth United States Colored Infantry of which he was commissioned colonel on the 25th of March 1863. Colonel Drew was given command of the Third Brigade of the First Division of United States Cavalry and led this brigade in the assault on the defenses of Mobile, Alabama. He was breveted brigadier general of volunteers on 26 March 1865. After Mobile he was involved in advance on Montgomery, Alabama after which he returned to New Orleans and resigned from active service 19 August 1865. After the war General Drew made his home in Chicago, Illinois where he was an insurance executive.
