Susie Anna Parks Barnes

Services for Susie Anna Parks Barnes, 98, of Longview will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at the Welch Funeral & Memorial Center Chapel with a Garden Court committal. Officiants will be the Rev. Dewayne Beaty and the Rev. Bill Hansen. Burial will be in Kilgore City Cemetery. Mrs. Barnes died Monday, Dec. 15, 2003, at Summer Meadows.

She was born in Sasakwa, Indian Territory, on April 6, 1905, in a log cabin on the banks of the South Canadian River, to Rachel Lettie Anne Jackson Parks and John William Anthony Parks. She was the seventh child in a family of nine children: four boys and five girls.

She was reared on a large farm and loved everything about it except picking cotton. Her high school in Oklahoma was destroyed by a storm, so Susie went to live with her grandfather in Garden Grove, Calif., to complete her sophomore and junior years. She returned to Sasakwa for her senior year, serving as president of her senior class and maintaining a 92 average grade for her four years.

She attended East Central State Teachers College in Ada, Okla., and William Jewell Baptist College in Liberty, Mo. She taught school for 14 years in Oklahoma and Missouri.

When she was 12 years old, she was saved and joined the First Baptist Church. She taught Sunday school for more than 50 years.

She married Walter Barnes on April 16, 1927. Their son, Robert Glenn, was born July 16, 1930. The Barnes family lived in Rockford, Ill., where they were active in the Baptist church, the country club and the community. They moved to Longview for their retirement.

Mrs. Barnes was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers, four sisters, her husband and her son.

She is survived by one sister, Stella, of San Antonio, and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends 10-11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, at the funeral and memorial center.
