Bjornstad, Wilford L. MADISON/ MEQUON - Wilford L. Bjornstad, age 92, of Mequon, passed away on Friday, Aug. 3, 2007. He was a former assistant division commander of the U.S. Army Reserve 84th Division (TNG) of Milwaukee and a retired U.S. Army Reserve Brigadier General. He was born on March 23, 1915, in Utica, the son of Olaf and Amanda (Smithback) Bjornstad. Wilford graduated from Madison West High in 1935, and delivered the senior farewell. He married his childhood friend and high school sweetheart, Nina Tofsrud on Sept. 3, 1941. Wilford needed to go AWOL to get married and was reduced in rank because of the incident. Retired U.S. Army Reserve Brigadier General (BG) honorably served during World War II, a recipient of many combat related decorations to include, the Bronze Star, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the French Croix de Guerre W/Vermsil Star, the Norwegian Medal of Freedom/ King of Norway, the American Theater Ribbon, European/African/ Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with one Silver Battle Star, the World War II Victory Medal, and Expert Carbine Medal. Wilford served in Norway, Normandy, North France, the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe. At this point in his career he was a major. After retiring in 1978 from Civil Service, he purchased and ran an equestrian facility along with his wife and daughter, in Mequon. Wilford is survived by his loving wife, Nina B. Tofsrud of Mequon; daughter, Jan Easterday of Mequon; granddaughter, Morgyn Easterday of Mequon; grandson, Eric Adelman of Port Washington; sister, Adeline Campbell of Indianapolis, Ind.; nieces and nephews, and many other family members. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jean S. Adelman; and three brothers, Olin Bjornstad, George Bjornstad and Morris Bjornstad. A Memorial Service will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, at 3 p.m., on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2007, with the Rev. Mary Pharmer presiding. Private burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 2 p.m. until the time of service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the Army Heritage Foundation, Gunderson East Funeral & Cremation Centers 5203 Monona Drive (608) 221-5420
