James Woodrow Dennison
08/02/1947 - 07/08/2010

James Woodrow "Jim" Dennison, 62, of Blackshear, died Thursday afternoon, July 8, 2010, at his residence following an extended illness.

He was a native of Morgantown, West Virginia, but had lived in Pierce County since 1972. He was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow W. Dennison and Elizabeth Jane Collins Dennison and by a brother, Gary M. Dennison.

He retired from Diagnostic Imaging as a salesman and x-ray service technician. He was also a licensed pilot and certified diver.

In 2006, he was elected as Chairman of the Pierce County Commission. He was a "hands on" chairman who believed that Pierce County and its citizens deserved the best. When he took office, this statement rang true with his ideals: "I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life."

Along with the late Randy Bass, he was instrumental in reinvesting and growing the recreation department. The duo, along with other elected officials, sought to invest in the community's youth. Today, their dreams are evident each evening as youngsters from all over the county play on its fields. Shouts of joy can be heard from Mac Thompson Field all the way to the door of heaven.

He was a go-getter. Even when his election bid showed him to be behind, he never wavered nor surrendered in his determination to serve his community. After the votes were counted and the candle flickered in the solitude of the evening, the voters spoke on who they wanted as their leader. He was not a follower, but a man who walked ahead when others waited. Few public servants, who have turned to politics so late in life, have climbed to the top of the pole. He was a man who ran a race even when others had decided to sit down. He was heard several times saying that "God did not call him to just start a race, but to run the race and finish it."

Along with his duties as chairman, his ex-officio duties also included memberships and associations within these organizations: the Pierce County Historical Society, Leadership Pierce, Airplane Pilots of America, Association County Commissioners of Georgia, Pierce County Health Department, Regional Development Center, Library Board and the Pierce Industrial Development Authority.

He was a long-time member of Emmanuel Baptist Church where he had worked with the youth for many years and was a member of Ron Spell's Sunday school class.

Survivors include his loving wife, Linda Gail Westberry Dennison, Blackshear; a son, Ian Dennison (wife Marie), Patterson; a daughter, Karla Harris (husband Richard), Blackshear; three grandchildren, Cade and Chloe Dennison, both of Patterson and Jarrett Harris of Blackshear; his father-in-law, Robert Westberry, Blackshear; a brother, David L. Dennison (wife Janet), San Diego, CA, and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Visitation will take place from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, July 11, at the funeral home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 12, from the Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Interment will follow in the Blackshear City Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Emmanuel Baptist Church Building Fund.

Members of the Pierce County Commission and all county employees are asked to serve as honorary pallbearers. They should meet at the church by 10:30 a.m. Monday.
