ABBEY - Lawrence Frederick "Larry" Abbey, 78, died Wednesday evening, July 3, 2002. He was predeceased by his wife Linda May Isenhower. Cause of death was a progressive neurological deterioration that appeared in March of this year.

Larry was born in 1924 in Newark, New Jersey, and spent his youth in nearby Nutley. His college years were interrupted to serve in the Ninth Air Force, 322nd Bomb Group of the Army Air Corps in WWII, flying 24 missions as a B-26 Marauder aerial gunner. He returned to Rutgers University after the war and earned a bachelor's degree in agriculture in 1949, then moved to Charlotte, NC, as a sales rep for Wyeth Pharmaceuticals veterinary division. There in North Carolina he met his wife Linda, where they married and had their first child.

In 1954, Larry and family moved to Jacksonville. He worked for 34 years as a sales rep for Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, was active in his church as a Sunday School teacher and superintendent and as a council member, and participated in Saturday Morning Toastmasters. Larry was a prolific storyteller to all who met him, an attentive listener with a keen memory, a nurturing father who always put his famiy before himself, a delighted grandfather, and a devoted husband.

Larry is survived by his brother Dr. Thomas E. "Tom" Abbey and his wife Patricia, by his children, Sandra Abbey, Mary Abbey-Conner and husband Lawrence Conner, and Larry Abbey, Jr., by his grandchild Catherine Conner, by many other loving family members, and by his devoted caregivers Jeanice Peterson and Shelley Moreno.

A memorial service will be held 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Merrill Road. Interment will be private at Oaklawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association or the American Cancer Society.

Larry (and wife Linda) Abbey were our neighbors in the Arlington area of Jacksonville for many years. They had lived there on Theed Street since the houses were new in the 1950's. Larry was one of the kindness men that ever lived. We were so financially strapped when 'newbies' in the neighborhood. Larry was always there with a garden tool or anything we needed. He always had a sweet smile and a funny joke to impart. He was something that is very rare these days: A Good Man.

We used to joke about how our birthdays were so similar. He shared a birthday less one day with my husband, and wife Linda shared a birthday less one day with me! What are the chances of that happening?! We had so much fun together.

We miss them very much. God rest your soul, gentle man, until we meet with Jesus in the air.
