US Marine 2LT Ted Willis Edwards, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Charlotte, NC. Graduate of UNC, Class of 1966.

US Marine Second Lieutenant Ted Willis Edwards was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Marine Corps Reserve, 2LT Edwards served our country until February 2nd, 1968 in Quang Tri, South Vietnam. He was 23 years old and was not married. Ted died from small arms fire or grenade. His body was recovered. 2LT Edwards is on panel 36E, line 069 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for one year.

He was a fraternity brother: "Tedwards" was a great guy. Soft spoken, athletic, funny, smart. I'm sure he was a good Marine. Ted graduated in 1966 from UNC. I graduated a year later. We were both in the DU fraternity. I heard about Ted by letter from a fraternity brother while I was in the Army in Korea in 1968. I found his mother, or she found me, after I had written a piece several years ago for a magazine in which I had stated that Ted and several other North Carolinian's who had died in our military were the best gifts which we, as North Carolinian's had ever received. He'd have been 60 now. I'm sorry he died. Blaze DU UNC '67. David Benbow, PO Box 432, Statesville, NC, 28687-0432.

Ted Willis Edwards Date of death: February 2, 1968 Place of Birth: Virginia, Roanoke Home of record: Charlotte North Carolina Status: KIA AWARDS AND CITATIONS Silver Star Awarded for actions during the Vietnam War The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Ted Willis Edwards (MCSN: 0-100215), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as an Artillery Forward Observer with Company K, Third Battalion, First Marines, Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. On 2 February 1968 during Operation SALILNE, Second Lieutenant Edwards' company had established a night defensive position east of the village of Lam Xuan in Quang Tri Province when it was attacked by a battalion-size North Vietnamese Army force. Reacting instantly, he called in pre-planned defensive artillery fire missions on the enemy, repeatedly disregarding his own safety as he moved to vantage points along the defensive perimeter. Observing and skillfully adjusting accurate fire from three separate artillery batteries, he successfully halted the enemy's advance along one sector of the defensive lines and blocked their retreat to the west. On several occasions throughout the night, he boldly adjusted artillery fire on North Vietnamese soldiers who had advanced to within a few meters of his unit's position, successfully preventing them from penetrating the perimeter. Shouting encouragement to his men, he steadfastly remained on the front lines, even after the arrival of reinforcements at dawn, and subsequently was mortally wounded by enemy rifle fire as he directed a fire mission. His heroic actions were instrumental in the defeat of the hostile force and enabled his company to kill 144 of the enemy. By his exceptional professionalism, bold initiative and loyal devotion to duty, Second Lieutenant Edwards upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country. Action Date: February 2, 1968 Service: Marine Corps Rank: Second Lieutenant Company: Company K Battalion: 3rd Battalion Regiment: 1st Marines, 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade

He was the son of Mr and Mrs Thomas B Edwards, 7010 Lakeside Drive, Charlotte, NC.

He served with Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 11th Marines, 1st Marine Division, 3rd MAF.

He was awarded The Combat Action Ribon(CAR). The Silver Star for Gallantry in Action, The Purple Heart Medal for his combat related wounds, The Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
