Charles "Wayne" Bensheimer, 79, Nineveh, passed away Monday, July 4, 2011, at Homeview Health and Rehabilitation Center in Franklin.

Mr. Bensheimer was a 26-year veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in Korea. After serving, he entered the Indiana National Guard at Camp Atterbury, where he organized the military camp fire department, serving as fire chief and also honorary fire marshal of the Job Corps. He also served as a mechanic for the State of Indiana at Camp Atterbury for 20 years, where he received various awards. He was a 23-year member of the Nineveh Volunteer Fire Department, where he served in various positions.

Previously, he had owned Bensheimer's Garage in Marietta and Bensheimer Farm Equipment and Repairs in Stones Crossing, Greenwood. He was a member of Honey Creek United Methodist Church in Greenwood, and attended Nineveh Christian Church. He was a member of the Johnson County Antique Machinery Association, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Nineveh Conservatory District.

Born Dec. 16, 1931, in Johnson County, he was the son of Frank Eunice Bensheimer and Flossie Lemmons Bensheimer, both of whom preceded him in death.

He married Beverly J. Hacker Bensheimer on May 22, 1987, in Nineveh, and she survives.
Other survivors include daughters, Karen K. Mercer, Nineveh, Donna (Roger
Dean) Bensheimer, Seymour, and Beverly J. (Steve) Wilson, Columbus; stepson, Dwayne A. (Sandy) Hansford, Shelbyville; stepdaughter, Tammy J. (Grant) Thompson, Shelbyville; children he raised, David Edmonds and Janet (Tom) Acton, both of Columbus, and Gary Bensheimer, Franklin; 12 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and six foster grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Oral Bensheimer and Travis "Tad" Bensheimer, and two sisters, Janice Lanier and Ruth Ellen Spurling.

The Rev. Tom Knight will conduct funeral services at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 S. U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin.

Burial with full military honors will be at Nineveh Cemetery.

Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
