Donald Perry "Don" Stone, 77 years, 2 months and 17 days of age, of Somerset, Kentucky, departed this life and entered into eternal peace on Tuesday, December 2nd, 2003 at the Wayne County, Hospital in Monticello, Kentucky.

Don was born in Mount Sterling, Kentucky on September 15th, 1926, son of the late James leonard and Virginia Manley Stone. Don was a well-known music educator and choir director in Somerset, Kentucky. He was a graduate of Mount Sterling High School, where he played high school football. He received a bachelor of music degree from the University of Kentucky. While at the University of Kentucky he was a member of the University of Kentucky Band and symphony orchestra, and was a trombone major.

During World War II, he was accepted to the United States Naval School of Music and later served aboard the aircraft carrier USS Wasp.

Don was a band director at Somerset High School for 29 years, taking the band to Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1962. It was the first Kentucky band in the Macy's parade, he later took the band to several other places of national renown. Don was a wonderful teacher and a wonderful band director, all the children loved to perform for him. He was instrumental in starting the Somerset High School Jumperettes. Don was a hands-on director ... he marched with the students and got the most out of all of them. He was a drill sergeant in the truest sense and a quality individual. Don accepted the position of music teacher at Somerset High School on July 1st, 1950, he taught beginning, junior high band, senior band, boys' and girls' chorus, and a mixed chorus. Don developed a curriculum for music theory, music humanities, and stage band. Don taught chorus at the former Dunbar High School and beginning band students in the Science Hill Independent School District to prepare them for the high school band at Somerset High School.

Assisted by Arthur Dondero, a retired violinist with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, he started the Somerset Civic Orchestra. The Somerset Civic Orchestra Association, later the Lake Cumberland Performing Arts, was formed to attract cultural events. He served in 1961 as president of the Middle Cumberland Music Educators Association. He was also a conductor of the Pulaski County Oratorio Chorus and many other community choirs, including assisant director and director of the Somerset Community College Chorus. Don was recognized by the Master Musicians Festival for his significant lifetime accomplishments in music education.

Religion was a big part of Don's life. He served as choir director at the First Christian Church in Somerset for 40 years. During this time, he started and directed the Men's Choir that became locally famous with its Sunday evening radio broadcast on WSFC. He also taught Adam's Sunday School Class at First Christian Church for 9 years. He was an elder of the Church.

Don was survived by his loving wife, Fanie Benelli Stone, whom he married on June 11th, 1955 in Somerset, Kentucky; two daughters, Susan Perry Stone and Vicki (and Earl) Goode; seven grandchildren, Benjamin McDonald, Jason McDonald, Mary Ishmael, Sarah Redmond, Laura McDonald, John Calico, and Kimberly Goode; three great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends who mourn his passing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James leonard and Virginia Stone; and one sister, Francis Adams.

Visitations were held on Friday, December 5th, 2003 after 4:00 p.m. at the Somerset Undertaking Company in Somerset, Kentucky and again on Saturday, December 6th from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral services at the First Chiristian Church also in Somerset.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 6th, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Chiristian Church with Rev. Joe Altman officiating.

Burial followed on Monday, December 7th, 2003 at 11:00 a.m. in the Mill Springs National Cemetery in Nancy, Kentucky.
