KENDALLVILLE - DeWitt L. "Dewey" Cochard, age 83, died on Monday, March 22, 2004 at home in Auburn, Indiana.
He was born near Fostoria, Ohio in Seneca County on April 26, 1920 to Charles Roscoe Cochard and Gertrude Hazel
(Linhart) Cochard. The Cochard family moved to the Kendallville area in 1938.
Dewey graduated from Kendallville High School in 1938 and attended Ball State College where he became Junior Class
He joined the U.S. Navy on December 8, 1941 to October 24, 1945 serving during WWII including combat duty in the
South Pacific aboard a PT boat as Quarter Master 1st Class.
He attended Indiana University and graduated in 1947 with a bachelor of science degree in business.
On October 12, 1947 he married Jean Stiver at the First Methodist Church in Kendallville and she preceded his death
July 4, 2002.
He worked briefly for a car dealer in Garrett; three years for McCray Refrigeration Company in Kendallville; 21 years for
Hubbard Spool Company in Garrett as controller and 10 years at Newman Foundry in Kendallville as purchasing manager
retiring in 1982.
He was a member of Trinity Church United Methodist, V.F.W. Post #2749, American Legion Post #86, Elks Club, Masonic
Lodge, and MENSA International. He also was a former member of Mizpah Shrine and rode with the Pedal-Pushers parade unit.
He was active in various civic duties including 10 years as center manager for Junior Achievement and served on the Traffic
Commission. Dewey also was a avid golfer.
He is survived by three sons, Lee & Kathy Cochard of Auburn, Indiana; Dr. Larry & Susan Cochard of Evanston, Illinois;
and Lynn & Kim Cochard of Kendallville. Two daughters, Karen & Dan Burtnette of Fort Wayne, Indiana and Kathy Cochard
of Bloomington, Indiana. Six grandchildren, Jeff Cochard, Jane and partner, Geoff Davis, Janelle Cochard, and Joey & Jacqueline
Burtnette all of Fort Wayne, and Kelly Stephens of Kendallville.
Three brothers, Rex Cochard of Fort Wayne; C.C. Cochard of Scottsdale, Arizona and George Cochard of Fortville, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents & wife, Jean; a granddaughter, Judith Ann Cochard in 1984; two brothers, Willis and Robert
Cochard and a sister, Donna (Cochard) Barker.
Visitation will be held Friday, 3-26-04, from 2:00-4:00 & 6:00-8:00pm at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville.
Funeral Services will be held Saturday, 3-27-04 at 11:00am at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville.
Officiating the funeral will be Pastor Robert Farmer from First Christian Church.
Burial will be at the Lake View Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by the Kendallville V.F.W.
