Artist. Best known for his grand-scale abstract paintings. His work appears in permanent collections of major museums across the country including the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City. He taught at the Jepson Art Institute in Los Angeles from 1948 to 1952 before joining the UCLA art faculty in 1953, retiring as an influential professor emeritus there in 1991. He was the son of comedian Fanny Brice and Jules "Nicky" Arnstein. By mutual agreement, he did not appear in the storyline of "Funny Girl," the Broadway musical and subsequent biopic about his parents' relationship that was produced by his sister Frances' husband Ray Stark.
