Evening Times; Cumberland, Maryland, Monday, July 8, 1940 - pg 9, col 7: "More Than 20 Priests at George L. Long Funeral--Funeral services for George L. Long, 69, who died Thursday, was held this morning with solemn requiem high mass at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, celebrated by his son, Rev. Valentine Long O. F . M. of St. Bonaventure's College, N. Y. Interment was in SS Peter and Paul Cemetery. The services were made doubly impressive by the presence of more than 20 priests, many of them members of the Franciscan Order with Father Long. In the group of mourners were Sister Radigundis, sister superior of Mt. St. Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Md., a sister of Mr. Long and his daughters, Sister Agnes Marie of Ursuline Academy, this city and Sister George Marie of Sacred Heart College, Louisville, Ky., and Sister Tranquilla also of Mt. St. Mary's College. Assisting Father Long were Rev. was Father Boniface, O. M. Cap., of SS Peter & Paul Church, as deacon; Rev. Francis J. McKeown of St. Patrick's Church, this city, sub-deacon and Rev. Father Claude Keane O.F.M., of St. Bonaventure's College, master of ceremonies. The eulogy was delivered by Father Boniface. Priests in attendance were Very Rev. John J. Dowling, Washington, D.C. ; Rev. Robert Kilgannon, Ridgeley, W. Va.; Rev. W. F. Culhane, vice-president of Mt. St. Mary's College, Emmitsburg, Md.; Rev. Leonard Walsh, O.F.M. in charge of Mt. St. Sepulchre, Washington, D.C.; Rev Thomas Plassman, O.F.M., president of St. Bonaventure College, N.Y.; Rev. Isidore O'Brien, O.F.M. ; Rev. David Baier, O.F.M; Rev. Mark Kennedy, O.F.M.; Rev. William Clancy, O.F.M.; Rev. Maurice Sheier, O.F.M.; Rev. Gentle Crowley, O.F.M.; Rev. Theophane Leary, O.F.M.; Rev. Christine Bittenbender, O.F.M., all of the Franciscan order. Rev. Father Leander, O.M. Cap of SS Peter and Paul Church and Rev. Brother Giles of Mt. St. Sepulchre, Washington, D. C. The large congregation attested to the esteem in which Mr. Long was held in a wide circle of acquaintances throughout the county and by members of the congregation of SS Peter and Paul Parish. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society of the Parish and of Cumberland Council No 56 Knights of Columbus. At the conclusion of the services at the cemetery by Father Long, Father Bonaventure and Father McKeown, each of the priests present blessed the grave. Music for the solemn high mass was sung by the choir of the Ursuline Academy. Mr. Long was a native of Cumberland, a son of the late George and Elizabeth Fletcher (sic-Fletchinger) Long. He entered into the tobacco brokerage business as a young man and continued his own firm with his sons. He was active until a few months ago when he became critically ill, but had recovered and was enjoying good health until early last week. His death on Thursday was unexpected. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Agnes C. (Lippold) Long, four sons: the Rev. Valentine Long, O.F.M., St. Bonaventure College, Allegany, N.Y.; Joseph, Baltimore; James H. and Andrew J. Long, this city; four daughters: Sister Agnes Marie, SS Peter and Paul convent, this city; Sister George Marie, Sacred Heart Academy, Louisville, Ky.; Miss Eleanor E. Long and Mrs. Richard F. McMullen, both at home; a sister, Sister Radigundis, Emmitsburg, and a grandson, John P. McMullen, at home. Out of town relatives here for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Herman Shockey, Mr. George Shockey, Miss Cleo Shockey, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Shockey, Mrs. George Cross and Mr. Robert Shockey, all of Meyersdale, Pa., and John Schwarzenbach of Pittsburgh. The pallbearers were Michael F. O'Neill, Sr., George A. Lippold, Edward M. McNamee, Thomas J. Stakem, William Beane and Frederick A. Puderbaugh." (Courtesy of Pat Dailey)
