Urbana Man Is Killed by Corn Picker
Urbana - Orville D Manley. 30, a lifelong resident in the Urbana area, was kille early Sunday afternoon when his shirt caught in the power takeoff of a corn picker at his father's farm three miles east of Urbana in Linn county.
He was helping his father Louis Manly, in the field with corn picking. His father drove to the farmyard at 1:30 pm with a load of corn and noticed that the corn picker in the distance had stopped moving. When his father returned to the field, he found his son dead of a broken neck.
Mr. and Mrs. O. D. Manley had their own farm four miles northeast of Vinton, and he also sold appliances. He was born Nov. 22, 1927, south of Urbana and graduated from the Urbana high school in 1945. He was married to Mildred Norman at Charlton July 1, 1950.
O. D. Manley is survived by his widow, three children of preschool age, Linda, Donald and Susan; his parents, the Louis Manleys; two brothers, Dean of Santa Monica, Cal., and Dick, 10, still at home, and a sister, Mrs. Ivan (Fern) Boyles of Arlington, Ia.
Funeral services for Mr. Manly will be held Thursday at 2:00 pm in the Urbana Christian church and burial will be in the Urbana cemetery. Rev. Oscar Barrows will officiate.
Friends may call at the Murdoch funeral home in Center Point after 10:00 am Tuesday.
