HENRY BENDER

Henry William Bender, the seventh oldest of the nine children born to Henry C. Bender and Margaret Rossbach, was born on February 9, 1903, near Cornlea, Nebraska. He grew up on the family farm and received his education in Sacred Heart Parish School there. In 1936 he went to Huron Lake, Minnesota, where he worked for a road construction operator. In 1938, he went to Rock Island, Illinois, and worked in the shop of the J.I. Case Company until he was inducted into the United States Army in March of 1942. On Christmas Day of that year he started overseas and landed in England. He was stationed at Grafton, Underwood Station, with the 443rd Sub. Depot of the United States Air Force. Here he remained until November of 1945, when he returned to the States and obtained his honorable discharge on December 1, 1945, with the rank of Staff Sergeant.

He was united in marriage to Kathleen Rose Barker on September 18, 1943, in St. Edward Church, Kettering, Northampton, England. She was born on September 2, 1912, at East Haddon, Northants, England, the daughter of Thomas Barker and Ann Elizabeth Jones. She received her education in the Northampton School District in England.

To this union were born nine children:

Mr. and Mrs. Bender were living in Geddington, Northants, England when the first two children were born. After the birth of her second child, Mrs. Bender came to join her husband in the States, since he had returned in November of 1945, and was now discharged from the Army. They settled on a farm near Humphrey, NE, where their next three children were born, and where they belonged to Sacred Heart Parish in Cornlea. They moved to St. Edward, NE, for three years, then he worked for I-Go Van Lines in Omaha. In 1957 they moved to Rogers, NE. The children received most of their education in Colfax County Grade School and in Schuyler High School.

Mr. Bender was killed on December 10, 1970, in a three car accident on icy highway 30 several miles east of Schuyler, on his way to work in Schuyler, NE. He was buried from St. Augustine Church, Schuyler, NE, and laid to rest in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Cornlea, NE.
Mrs. Bender moved to Schuyler and lived with her son, LeRoy. She suffered a heart attack there and died on February 13, 1982. She was buried from St. Mary Church, Schuyler, and laid to rest in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Cornlea, NE.
