Fred Markway, Sr. died at the home of his son, Fred, Jr. near Wardsville this morning after an illness of several months. He was 87 years old. Markway, father of Former County Collector, Al Markway, and Chief of Police, Ben Markway, had been a resident of Cole County nearly all his life. He was born in Germany July 1, 1856 and was brought to the United States by his parents when a child of 2. The family settled in New York for a short time and when he was 12 years old moved to Jefferson City.
He was employed for some time in the Pohl Brick Yard serving as a water boy. At the age of 18 he went to Wardsville where after several years he established one of the best farms in that section of the county. He married Catherine Schnieders Aug. 10, 1880. He was one of the founders and served on the board of directors of the Catholic Church in Wardsville continuously since. He took an active interest in community affairs and was prominent in Cole County development.
Five sons, four daughters and 56 grandchildren survive. Of the grandchildren eleven are in the armed services of the nation. One grandson, Lieut. Robert Markway, was killed in a plane crash. The sons are Henry of Jefferson City, Al of Wardsville, Frank and Ben of Jefferson City and Fred, Jr. of Wardsville. There is one adopted son, John, of this city. The daughters, Mrs. Leo DeBroeck, Wardsville, Mrs. J.B. Kolb, Jefferson City, Mrs. Roy Stockman, Wardsville, and Mrs. Louis Mehmert, Chamois.
