Lawrence Lafayette Burress was the son of Erastus Strong Burress and Henrietta "Mollie" Bass. He was born in Harrison County, Texas. His father died when Lawrence was just over a year old. Lawrence married Sarah Alice Clark on February 28, 1886 in Wise County, Texas, where they lived for the remainder of their lives. They were the parents of ten children who lived to adulthood. They first lived in the Dan/Greenwood area of Wise County, and later moved to Paradise. In their latter years, they lived in Bridgeport. Their children were Maude Estelle Burress Givens, Lela Burress Lokey, Allen Dale Burress, Archie Alfred Burress, Luther Lafayette Burress, Ollie Mae Burress Klepper, Arthur B. Burress, Earl Lawrence Burress, Edna Fay Burress Wilkinson Stevens, and Bill Burress.
