John Carter
Birth: May 19, 1782
Cumberland County
Maine, USA
Death: Aug. 13, 1852
Hancock County
Illinois, USA

John C. CARTER was born on 19 May 1782 in Scarborough, Cumberland, Maine. He was christened on 20 May 1782 in Scarborough, Cumberland, Maine. He died on 13 Aug 1852 in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois. He married Hannah KNIGHT LIBBY on 2 Mar 1805 in Scarborough, Cumberland, ME. John was a sailor in his youth, and lived successively at Scarborough and Newry Maine, and in Hancock County, Illinois. John CARTER and Hannah Knight LIBBY, both natives of Scarborough, Cumberland County, Maine, had a family of eleven children. Two died in infancy; all the others grew to maturity and reared families. John and Hannah lived at Scarborough until about 1810 when they moved to nearby Newry in Oxford County, Maine, where two of their children died and were buried 1815 and 1827. During the 1830 decade they joined the westward migration as did their progeny. Hancock County, Illinois records have a land deed dated 1842 from Jacob DOOLEY to John and Hannah K. L. CARTER. In 1846 some four years later John CARTER Sr. sold this tract to William CARTER. John CARTER Sr. did not leave Illinois as many of his family did when the Latter-day Saints vacated Nauvoo before the mobs assault. John CARTER never joined the LDS Church. Alhough he took Hannah to Illinois, he refused to go to Utah. Hannah left him and traveled west to the Great Salt Lake valley with the Mormons. John remained in Nauvoo until his death on 13 August 1852. His will was dated 9 August 1852 (just four days before death at age 70). His will dated 9 August 1852... mentions Almira, Phillip and Mary Jane also a grandson John DOOLEY. But no rememberance is made of Dominicus, William Furlsbury, John "H", Eliza Ann, Hannah, Richard's children, or his widow. Hannah Knight Libby CARTER was living in Utah Territory at that time. John CARTER's will was filed by the executrix Mary J. CARTER DOOLEY in Adams County, Illinois 19 August 1852. John CARTER was buried in the Fletcher Cemetery at Lima in Rocky Run Township, Hancock County, Illinois. Fletcher Cemetery is 2.75 miles west of Tiog, Hancock County and 2.75 miles northwest of Lima, Adams County, Illinois.
