JoAn was one of those special beings we are allowed to encounter through life. Full of quick affection and love which she effortlessly gave without any thought of reciprocation.

She was raised in Fort Scott, Kansas, with her older brother. A normal family unit with stories of taking the train to Kansas City for the day to do a little serious shopping.

She was an alumnus of Pittsburg State University, graduating with a degree in biology. She moved to Kansas City and found a position as a Librarian in the Kansas City Kansas Public Library System. Wonderful heady days of time passed as the decades of the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's rolled by with her retirement about 2005.

Life was life, with first Marcus and then Frank and then her ultimate marriage to Skip. Each relationship bringing new challenges. Oftentimes there was the roller coaster of emotions, never quiet knowing what the other person was intending. She fell into a comfortable pattern with Skip that hit most of the checks for happy on the scale.

Way back when she was a single girl, back when we first met, she would have wonderful parties in her duplex at 20th and Sandusky. Nothing elaborate, just a good mix of people. We would eat and dance, play games take pictures, laugh and talk into the wee hours of the next day. Joy and love equally shared time and time again. How could you not love this woman!

On May 4, 2003, she and family were huddled in the basement of their Cernech Road home when the tornado warnings that afternoon became all too real and it made a direct hit. All survived but the house was gone. Ultimately, she and Skip ended up renovating an old school house in rural Miami county and called it home.

At any point in her adult life she was happily Catholic or miserably Catholic. Don't we all go through these phases when gifted with analytical thought. I loved her for all that honesty. God delighted in her existence all the more no matter what conclusion she had reached for that particular day. God is like that, like JoAn, able to pour out love and affection effortlessly without any thought of reciprocation.

A Christmas prayer for you! I'd send you a Christmas card but I don't know the zip code for heaven.
