John Austin Bryant (known as Austin) was the son of Perkins and Serena (Young) Bryant. He married Rutha Belle (pronounced as Ruthie Belle) Brockman on January 25, 1888. They had 13 children, including a girl who was stillborn or died in infancy. The others were: Pearl, Viola Mae (known as Mae or May), Ida, Iva, Rosa (known as Rose), Virgil, Welby, Ocil, Vona Nell, Lucian, Ola and Tressie Dortha (known as Dorothy).
Austin was my mother's grandfather. I didn't know him as he died before I was born, but Mom told me a few stories about him.
My favorite is an odd story, but I believe I inherited a part of his tenacity (also known as stubborness). One time he decided he was going to take a bath with lye soap. His wife tried to talk him out of it, but he was determined that he was going to get himself as clean as possible. Back then they hadn't mastered the level of lye to add, so it could burn the skin pretty bad. He hurt for some time. He told his family that if he could do it, he'd skin himself with his pocket knife.
I'd like to thank my cousin, indcub, who originally posted this memorial. He did an awesome job photographing so many tombstones in Adair County, Kentucky. It was from him that I learned about findagrave. Thanks!
Many thanks to D. Meserole for sponsoring my great-grandfather's memorial.
