Balla was the daughter of Asa and Della (Scott) Polston. She went to Western Kentucky University and became a school teacher. She married Cassius Sullivan on August 12, 1924 in Adair County, Kentucky. They moved to Cincinnati and were living there in 1925 when my father, Huston, was born. They moved back to Kentucky after the depression began. She had tuberculosis. I found a letter from a friend written in 1938 in which the friend mentioned she was glad to hear that Balla was getting better. However, the effects of the tuberculous eventually claimed her life at the young age of 40.
She had 5 children: Huston, Roy, Earl, Gilbert and Fern. Her son, Gilbert, is buried next to her in the plot that had been intended for her husband. Cassius was buried in Freedom Cemetery.
Special thanks to Mackie for sponsoring my grandmother's memorial.
