George Drake, was born George Drakulich on June 8, 1915 in Ray, Arizona, the son of Yugoslavian immigrants. He grew up in Superior, where he worked in the mine and smelter. In 1947 he purchased a tavern on Main Street called the "Apache Leap," named for the mountains overlooking the town. He was also a journeyman steamfitter with UA Local 469. He worked for the CCC's on many projects, including the atomic bomb in Washington State. Upon retirement he began living full time in Phoenix. He believed that work kept you young, so he took a job at Shadow Mountain High School as a head custodian. He loved this job and worked until he was 74. This time retirement took on a new meaning and he and his wife Phonita began traveling in earnest, cruising became their favorite pastime. He was a long time member of the Miami Elks Lodge, the Pinal County Sheriff's Posse, and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He is survived by his wife, Phonita; daughters, Renee Drakovich Borgstrom (Richard) and Stephanie Drakulich-Navarro; grandsons, Jon, Joel (Kimberly) and Nick Navarro; great-grandchildren, Jillian Georgiana and Parker Navarro. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Grand Canyon University or the Superior Historical Society, Superior, AZ. Services will be held on Friday, October 3, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. at Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hay-den Rd., Scottsdale, AZ.
