RUN OVER BY TRAIN.
Nelson Burkholder Meets with Horrible Death at Garrett.
Garrett, PA, May 10, 1910. Nelson Burkholder, a resident of Summit township, living a few miles from Garrett, met a horrible death here last Saturday evening, by being run down and killed instantly by a passing mail train. Burkholder and another man were engaged in loading mine props near the B. & O. station. His wife had come to town in a buggy and wanted him to go home with her, but he was not through with his work and told her he would not accompany her. He wanted to send some things home in the buggy, however, and leaving her seated in the vehicle near the depot he started to cross the track to get the packages which Mrs. Burkholder was to take home. A fast mail train was approaching, and he stepped directly in front of it before he realized his danger. Someone called to him: "Look out, it will hit you!" which caused him to halt in the middle of the track to look around. In another second the train was upon him. The locomotive struck him and hurled him into the air a distance of six or eight feet, before the eyes of his wife and other horrified spectators. When he came down, the train passed over him, cutting off his left leg and crushing his skull. Death was instantaneous.
