Scruffy Buff "Mister Scruff" Moody
Birth: May 19, 1990
Flagler Beach
Flagler County
Florida, USA
Death: Jul. 14, 2003
Satsuma
Putnam County
Florida, USA

LT Larry S. Moody, Flagler Beach PD, located Scruff among a litter of Cocker Spaniel puppies listed as "for sale" when he was getting off work. His wife, Rebecca, had previously suffered a massive heart attack resulting from acute diabetes and was forced to retire virtually an invalid. She was an extremely lively individual who did not take being homebound well and had become greatly depressed. Pop Moody thought a pup would be excellent companionship for her and picked the "dirtiest, most mischieveous rascal" in the litter. Scruff was barely legal to sell at 8 weeks old, and Pop Moody brought Scruff home under his patrol jacket, riding in the middle of his chest. Scruff immediately bonded with Mom Moody. When she first saw him, she said, "You poor, dear scruffy! You stink and you need a bath!" Scruffy got named. To Susan and I, he simply became known as "Mr. Scruff." After his first trip home, Scruff never parted from Mom again except during her hospital trips. He was her constant companion and saved her life on two occasions. He hated the swimming pool, and when Mom would enter the water to soothe her arthritis, Scruff would walk along the border as close as he could get without getting wet. He could swim well but hated getting wet. Scruff would also "sing," and Mom would often coax him before feeding him, saying, "Mawmaw's Precious Pup!" or "Sing, Scruffy! Sing for your supper!" That was usually enough to get him started. He would also ambush Mom's daughter, Susan, by sneaking up on her when she was in the floor, pouncing, catching a mouthfull of her curly hair and shaking as if he were killing it. Scruff went into severe depression when Mom passed away in 1994. He always slept on the end of her sofa with the leg rest where she used to sit, and he always fell asleep with his nose inside one of Mom's old pink house slippers. He was mad at Pop Moody for several weeks after the slipper got so worn out and nasty, Pop had to throw it away. He once got mad at me and bit me on the right leg for sitting on Mom's end of the sofa. (He would have bit me several more times if I had not caught his neck until he calmed down.) Pop Moody spared no expense or treat to spoil Scruff, and he was pampered and indulged until he died a tired, old dog, knowing that he was very loved. Pop Moody found Scruff on Mom's end of the sofa, curled up, and thought he was sleeping because Scruff lost most of his hearing and was almost deaf. He had gotten into the habit of waking Scruff in the morning when it was time to eat or go outside. Scruff had passed away in his sleep. His passing absolutely devastated Pop Moody and Susan. Scruffy was subsequently cremated and had his ashes placed in Mom Moody's grave where he would have always wanted to rest.

LIFE: 13 Years, 1 Month, 26 Days

CAUSE OF DEATH: Old Age (passed away in his sleep)

The RAINBOW Bridge
"There is a bridge connecting heaven and earth.// It is called Rainbow Bridge because of its many colours.// Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, valleys with lush green grass.// When a beloved pet dies , the pet goes to this special place. There is always food and water and warm spring weather.// The old and frail are young again. Those who are maimed are made whole again.// They play all day with each other. There is only one thing missing.// They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth.// So each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up !// The nose twitches !// The ears are up !// The eyes are staring !// And this one suddenly runs from the group !// You have been seen, and when you and your special friend meet, you take him or her into your arms and embrace.// Your face is kissed again and again, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet.// Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated."

William N. Britton

A DOG'S PRAYER
"Treat me kindly, my beloved Master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your "voice" is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footsteps fall upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside, for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements. And I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth. Though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest house in all the land, for you are my god and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And, beloved Master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest - and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands."
