Son of Jonathan Wesley Dooley and Mary Fisher, he never married. Charles L. Dooley claimed residence in Lucas County, Iowa, when he enlisted on September 28, 1861, age 19. He served as a Union Private during the War of the Rebellion (Civil War). He enlisted in C Company, 13th Infantry Regular Iowa. He was killed at Shiloh, Tennessee on April 6, 1862 aged 20.
