Francisco Vazquez de Coronado
Birth: 1510
Death: Sep. 22, 1554

Western Explorer. Born in Salamanca, Spain, in 1535, as a Conquistador, he sailed to the New World and settled in Mexico City. In 1540, he led one of the earliest an expeditions into the Southwest of the United States. The expedition totaling nearly one thousand searched the soils of Texas for deposits of gold, silver and other treasures. He also traveled as far north as Kansas, into the Arizona area visiting a number of Hopi villages, followed the Colorado River and became the first European group to behold the Grand Canyon. He returned to Mexico in 1542, was appointed a councilman in Mexico City and served until his death. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
