Brewer was shot and killed in the midst of this hostility. Luico Flowers, who owned a clothing store beneath Brewer's office, said he shot Brewer in self-defense after a heated disagreement.
Brewer's widow, Lillian (nee Smith); their daughter, Thelma; and her husband, Dr. R. M. Haskins, left the city. (Brewer's son, Thomas H. Brewer Jr., also a doctor, had left the city years before.
