Revolutionary War General, US Congressman, US Senator. During the Cherokee Indian War, he served in the Virginia Militia and single handedly captured Baron Des Onnes, a French emissary sent to stir up trouble between the British and Cherokees. In 1860, he moved to Eutaw Springs, South Carolina and was made a justice of the peace in 1766. In the Revolutionary War, he was Colonel of The Regiment, Continental Line, in 1778. After fall of Charleston in 1780, he formed the South Carolina Militia, was commissioned Brigadier General and won the Battle at Fish Darn Ford, November 9, 1780. After the war, he founded the town of Statesburg, South Carolina and served in the State Assembly in 1783. In 1789, he was elected a Delegate to the First and Second Congresses, serving until 1793. He was reelected as a Democratic Republican to the Fifth, Sixth and Seventh Congresses, serving, 1797 to 1801. In 1801, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the US Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Charles Pinckney, reelected in 1805 and served until his resignation in December, 1810. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
