Francis Marion Rude left Illinois and came to California on a wagon train as an orphan with a cousin. He married Alice Winifred Snodderly on 1 July 1883 at Ione City, Amador County, California.
They moved to Goldendale soon after and filed for a homestead near Goldendale. They were the parents of 14 children born in Goldendale, 12 of whom lived to adulthood: Florence, Harvey, Victor, Vincent, Laura, Ida, Clarence, Claude, an infant girl who died young, Arthur, Irvin, Irma, Chester and Francis Marion.
He became a minister of the Advent Church. He and his parishioners built a church on the homestead at Woodland and established the cemetery. He and Alice deeded the church and cemetery land to the church in 1905. I am told the church building was moved to a different location.
