Lifelong farmer Edwin V. Brown, 89, of Bluffton and formerly of Montpelier, passed away Monday, Feb. 14, 2011, at Bluffton Regional Medical Center.
Born in Wells County on Sept. 8, 1921, he was the son of William and Pearl (Marker) Brown, both of whom preceded him in death. He married Emojean (Inskeep) in Liberty Center on Nov. 25, 1943; she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Darrell (Connie) Brown of Montpelier and Marvin (Mary) Brown of Terre Haute, and four daughters, Gloria (Bruce) Osborn of Bellevue, Wash., Marcia (Tom) Davey of West Lafayette, Cindy (James) Young of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Saundra Brown of Terre Haute. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, all of whom he called "George."
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Harold Brown, Earl Brown, Howard Brown, Clyde Brown, Joy Brown, and Everett Sawyer.
Ed graduated from Montpelier High School in 1939 and earned a B.S. Degree in Agriculture from Purdue University in 1943. He was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran serving his country for three and a half years. He joined the military in May of 1943 and served in the South Pacific as a Lab Technician with the 132nd General Hospital.
Ed taught school for ten years in Wells County having served at Liberty Center, Rock Creek, and Petroleum schools. He taught junior high and high school Ag Science and was a 4-H leader.
Ed served as District Conservationist of SCS in 1959 being the first person to have served in that position in Jay County. He worked in SCS for over 20 years in Blackford, Jay, and Vigo Counties retiring in 1981 to move back to the family farm in Blackford County. Ed also served as Surveyor in Blackford County. He was a member of the Bethel Church of Bluffton, the Ostomy Club of Muncie, the Cancer Society of Blackford County, Montpelier VFW Post and the Montpelier American Legion.
Calling hours are from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, at Thoma/Rich, Chaney & Lemler Funeral Home in Bluffton. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Pat Harris officiating. Burial will be in Alberson Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the American Legion Post and the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
Preferred memorials are to the Bethel Church.
