He married at an early age, Lurina J. Deavers, and fathered 10 children. His wife died in 1879.

Cival War record shows William Decatur Ballew served as a Confederate Soldier, a private with Company D, (Biffie's) 19th Tennessee Calvary, around 1862-65.

After the death of his first wife, he married a young girl in Roane County, Tennessee, Marissa Jane Bray, 7 Mar 1880 and fathered 10 more children. Around 1882 he moved to Koshkonong, Mo, and later to Mansfield, Mo. where he homesteaded 153 acres of land, patent dated 16 Apr 1893, signed by President Grover Cleveland. Major cash crop was timbers cut for the railroad. He died Nov 1911.
