He served in the War Between the States as a Pvt. in Company D, Second Georgia Infantry - Confederate. He is buried in the Garden of Beginnings. Bethune's father, James N. was a soldier in the Seminole War serving as a Captain and as General of the militia of Georgia. Educated in public schools, Bethune left school to enlist in the War Between the States, where he was injured twice while in action. By 1864 he had risen to the rank of first lieutenant and served until close to the war's end. Following the war he settled in Warrenton, Virginia and practiced law until 1876 when he moved to Los Angeles. While in Los Angeles Bethune practiced law and became registrar of the United States Land Office, a position he held for two years. In 1894 he moved to Arizona and was appointed judge of the First District Court of Arizona. Bethune was married in 1869 to Mary Agnes Clark, they're buried side by side.
