|Death: ||Apr., 2010, Kenya|
Mbeuti was another African lioness who was speared to death. She had two 13 months old cubs with her at the time of her death. Mbeuti divided her time between Kuku and Mbirikani Group Ranches in Kenya. A group of youths from the Moran tribe, trying to prove they were old enough to be warriors and able to protect their people decided to chase Mbeuti and her cubs for about 2 km (2 kilometer = 1.242 742 384 5 mile). The cubs escaped but their mother was not so lucky. Despite putting up a valiant fight, she was speared to death by the group of young Morans. One of the young men was seriously injured during their attack. This was a killing without reason and the twenty culprits were soon arrested.
Despite the odds being against them the two cubs have managed to survive the three months after their mother's death. Thanks to to the efforts and dedication of the Lion Guardians, they did not become victims of angry villagers, in retaliation of their stock being killed. The two cubs have not killed any of the village animals so far and Lion Guardians are trying to prevent this from ever happening. They are the only chance for these lions to survive. The cubs were last spotted in July 2010 in the same area they used to frequent with their mother Mbeuti.
In the next 30 years, if indiscriminatory killing of Africa's lions continues, it will cause the loss of 90% of the lions population, meaning 90% these beautiful animals will be lost forever.
