The aircraft was seen flying normally at about 1000 feet altitude. Suddenly thick black smoke was seen trailing behind, the aircraft made a quarter turn to the right, dove into the bay and exploded. The ship had taken off from Langley field on a high altitude radar navigation mission with the 3539th AAF Base Unit at Langley Field, was training radar navigators under AAF Eastern Technical Training Command.
The seventh member of the crew was 1st Lt. David Kitko.
