Ex-Confederate Passes To His Reward

Another of our venerable old men who has been accustomed to sit around the courthouse and while away his time talking with his associates passed away Monday morning at an early hour when W B Noland, an ex-Confederate soldier, passed away at the home of his son, Louis, six miles east of Cooper. At the age of 78 years, one of our well-known countrymen, closed his eyes in death and on Tuesday, at his own request he was buried in a home made coffin and his remains carried to the cemetery in a wagon to Giles churchyard and consigned to the tomb.

The deceased was a native of Alabama, having adopted Texas as his home some thirty years. For several years the family resided in Lamar county and then located in Delta, where his family of sons and daughters were raised and who practically still reside here.

With the declaration of Civil War, Mr Noland enlisted his sympathies with the Southern Cause and for four years fought under the banner of Red, White and Red. Of this event in his life he would often dwell in pleasing narrations and his listeners were delighted with the humorous lights he would often throw on the darker scenes of a desolated nation. It was his cheerful disposition which won him lasting friends.

The funeral was conducted from the home of Louis Stone Noland by Brother Joe McClain, and at the grave side Brother A R Fletcher offered the closing service.

The deceased is survived by five sons and one daughter: Ed , Perry, Bob, Louis and E P Noland, all residents of Delta county and Mrs Mary Fowler who resides in Lamar county.
