John had six siblings: Ernest Larry Gary, Emma Babb Gary (Banks), Lena M. Gary, Robert C. Gary, Rev. Cldye R. Gary, and Grady Bryan "Blue" Gary. He also had one half sister, Mary A. Gary, from his father's second marriage to Patty Stone Richards.
John became a minister at the age of 20. He pastored churches in Texas until 1926 when he moved to the Mississippi Delta area, where he served until his retirement from the Church of God in 1957. He was a resident of Greenville for 31 years.
In 1909, John married Sallie Ida Downing in Bryan, Texas. Together, they had 10 children: Jodie Ray Gary, Dollie Marie Gary (Tatum), Tabatha Pauline Gary (Cain, Cole), Maudie Dean "Maudine" Gary, Willie Bell Gary (Burcham), John Cornell "JC" Gary, Melvin Cleo Gary, Thelma Gary (Wolfe), William Thomas "Bill" Gary, and Claudius "Claudie" Gary. There may have been two children who died in infancy: Grace Lee Gary and Nellie May Gary.
John died of pneumonia on June 1, 1973 at Washington County General Hospital in Greenville, Mississippi. He was buried at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery, also in Greenville.
