LEE, Timothy Cuthbert II,
(Private, Company "H" 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment/ Private, Company "C" 11th Florida Infantry Regiment)

Timothy Cuthbert Lee was born April 2, 1843 in Dale Co., Alabama and he died May 4, 1918, in Houston County, Alabama, the son of Tobias and Elizabeth (Severance) Lee.

He was married on December 22, 1863, in Dale County, Alabama, to Sarah A. E. Dowling, born May 7, 1845 in Dale County, Alabama died March 4, 1915 in Houston County, AL, a daughter of James and Nancy (Martin) Dowling. They were the parents of ten children.

During the Civil War Tim served with both Alabama and Florida troops He enlisted 10 Aug 1861 at Richmond, Virginia, with company H, 15th Alabama Infantry, and was wounded at Cold Harbor, VA, 27 June 1862. He was discharged 25 Dec 1862 on account of shellfire deafness. In 1907 he applied for a pension as a result of this service. On 19 Aug 1863 he and his future father-in-law James Dowling enlisted at Camp Curry with company C of the 11th Florida Infantry, and, except for December, 1863, (when he deserted in order to go home and marry Sallie Ann) he served with the 11th Florida at least through June, 1864. His older brother John Taylor Lee was an officer in the latter unit, which may explain how Tim escaped major punishment for his desertion.

A story has come down in his family about Tim's visits as an old man to his grandson W. C. Reynolds who lived on a nearby farm. At that time, W.C. had two sons, George and Max, and a daughter named Ruth, who was the middle child. He would always bring some sort of treat for his great grandchildren, a peach or some pecans or some other small gift. The treats George and Max got always were a bit flawed, perhaps a small bruise on the peach or some such blemish, but Ruth's treat was always perfect because Tim said she reminded him so much of his Sallie Ann.

"T. C. Lee was born in Dale County Ala., April 2, 1843 and departed in Houston county May 14. 1918. At eighteen he volunteered to serve in the Confederate army, believing that to be right, serving under Col. Wm. C. Oats, 15 Alabama Regiment Co. H.

On June 27, 1862 he was wounded at the battle of Cold Harbor, and on account of deafness produced by the explosion of a shell near his head was discharged the following Dec. 25th.

He was married to Miss Sallie A. Dowling Dec. 22, 1863 and to this union were born ten children one of whom preceded them into the upper life.

His wife also preceded him into the eternal home, having passed on April 4, 1915.

A member of the M. E. church south about fifty years, he was regular in his attendance unless prevented by sickness.

His testimony before departing was assuring, realizing the approaching dissolution.

All means of loving children and kind friends having failed he passed out of this world.

May the God of all grace guide all of his children home. T. B. Harrow, P. C"
