HENRY BARTON CECIL (188-1933), Navy Air Force in World War I, Commander CECIL lost his life in the dirigible "Akron" disaster of April 4, 1933.
1933 -Commander HENRY BARTON CECIL of Scott County was killed when his U.S. Navy blimp, The Akron, crashed in New Jersey
Commander in U S Navy. Lost at sea in the Airship Akron disaster. The Akron was a dirigible which went down off the coast of New Jersey during an electrical storm.
There were 76 men aboard. Only 3 survived. Bart was a guest on the flight.
Lost in U.S. Navy Airship Akron; disaster. Served in U. S. Navy; twenty seven years. Ensign; to Commander - Air Service seventeen years.
Cecil Field near Jacksonville, Florida was named in his honor.
